Making Doughnuts, Again

by Matthew B. Blakley

Slipping the flesh-like
doughnuts into the
deep fryer had always
been our favorite part.

Stand back honey,
don’t let it get’cha,
mother would say.
And while she’d

drop each one
into the sear pit
to toughen
and scar brown,

she’d watch each
float as though with envy:
wondering if
they could feel it—

hoping they could.
